Homework Response - Babylonian Mathematics

 Speculative Phase: 

1) The Sumerians, who developed a base 60 numerical system, influenced the mathematical methods of the Babylonians. Base 60 is an important aspect of this numerical system because factors 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 12, 15, 20, 30, and 60 all contribute to the division of the number 60.

2) In everyday life, the number 60 is quite significant. We use the number 60 in our everyday life when it relates to time. There are 60 seconds in a minute and 60 minutes in an hour. In class, the significance of Babylonian history sheds light on the foundations of base 60 and how it influences their culture. 

Research Phase:

3) In geometry and astronomy, a full circle is comprised of 360 degrees, which is evenly divisible by 60. This concept was then translated into time, where minutes will then convert into seconds. This mathematical characteristic allows for ease of computation and accurate measurements and is particularly advantageous in the fields of geometry and astronomy where precision is crucial.

  1. Thanks, Brandon. You could elaborate a bit more on this post. The question was, "Why the Babylonians chose base 60 rather than the base 10 system?" Why might 60 be a convenient, significant, or especially useful number, other than having many factors? There are many other numbers that have this quality. How is it different from 10? Also, are you aware of other uses of 60 other than what have already been discussed in class? It would be great to hear your further thoughts.
